Reviving a Promise: The Transformation of Z.P. School Belpada, Tal. Murbad (2024)
After the successful transformation of Z.P. School Lavhali, Lakshya Foundation entered what we call our replication phase—a long-term commitment to identify, document, and gradually transform educational institutions across the Badlapur–Murbad–Mhasa tribal belt.
This phase is not driven by speed, but by responsibility.
It asks one fundamental question again and again:
If a school building exists, but children do not feel safe or inspired inside it—does education truly exist there?
One of the clearest answers to this question emerged at Z.P. School Belpada, Taluka Murbad.
Why Z.P. School Belpada Matters
Z.P. School Belpada is not an ordinary village school.
It is a central Zilla Parishad school, educating students from multiple surrounding tribal villages. While children in nearby padas complete their primary education locally (up to Grade 4 or 5), Belpada becomes their only gateway to continued schooling till Grade 8.
As of 2023, the school served 87 students—each of them standing at a crucial educational threshold.
If Belpada fails, the educational journey of several villages collapses at once.
A New Building, Old Fears
The earlier school structure at Belpada had been declared beyond repair, prompting the Zilla Parishad to construct a new two-storey school building.
On paper, this should have been a moment of relief.
On the ground, it became a moment of uncertainty.
Within months of construction:
- Rainwater began percolating from the top floor to the ground floor
- Classrooms turned damp, dark, and unsafe during monsoons
- There was no electrical infrastructure—no lights, fans, or wiring
- Plaster began falling off, despite the building being newly constructed
- Open passages without weather protection allowed rain to lash into corridors during windy showers
By the time the building was ready for handover, it already looked and behaved like an old, neglected structure.
Teachers faced an impossible choice.
The old school was unsafe.
The new school felt unsafe too.
Out of concern for their students, teachers initially hesitated to shift, continuing classes in the older structure despite its risks. But eventually, under mounting pressure, schooling had to be moved to the new building.
What followed was a quiet erosion of confidence—among teachers, students, and parents alike.
Lakshya Foundation’s Engagement
Lakshya Foundation had been visiting Belpada repeatedly as part of its broader tribal school survey. By early 2024, the situation had become clear:
This was not a case of neglect.
This was a case of urgency without support.
By February 2024, Lakshya Foundation had already prepared and shared detailed assessment reports and project proposals with multiple organizations, seeking CSR support for Belpada’s transformation.
But time was not on the students’ side.
The monsoon would return.
Learning conditions would worsen.
And hesitation would quietly turn into dropout risk.
Choosing Action Without a Safety Net
Unlike Z.P. School Lavhali—where CSR support from Synechron Technologies provided a strong foundation—Belpada had no confirmed corporate backing.
And yet, waiting felt irresponsible.
So in May 2024, Lakshya Foundation made a conscious decision:
We will begin—even if we must rely only on pooled donations, individual contributions, and community trust.
This decision reflected a deeper belief:
That education cannot be paused until funding feels comfortable.
The Transformation (May–July 2024)
Work at Z.P. School Belpada began with structural priority, not aesthetics.
1. Securing the Roof
- A properly engineered roof shed with trussing was installed across the entire school.
- Waterproofing ensured that rainwater seepage and percolation were permanently addressed.
This single step changed everything.
Classrooms dried.
Floors stayed safe.
Fear lifted.
2. Electrification
- Complete electrical wiring was installed.
- Classrooms and passages received lights and fans, restoring visibility and comfort.
Learning could finally happen without strain.
3. Restoration & Painting
- The entire school was repainted, reversing the prematurely aged appearance.
- Theme paintings were added to create a child-friendly, welcoming environment.
4. Greening the Campus
- Trees were planted along the boundary to enhance both aesthetics and long-term environmental balance.
What Changed—and What It Meant
The impact was immediate and visible.
- Teachers felt safe and respected in their workspace.
- Students began to occupy classrooms with pride, not reluctance.
- Parents regained confidence in government schooling.
- The building itself started doing what it was meant to do—invite learning.
Today, Z.P. School Belpada is not merely functional.
It is heartening.
It is the kind of place where:
- children want to attend,
- teachers can focus on teaching,
- and education feels possible again.
A Story of Self-Reliance
The transformation of Z.P. School Belpada stands as one of Lakshya Foundation’s most meaningful achievements of 2024—not because of scale, but because of intent.
It reflects:
- community faith,
- organizational courage,
- and the belief that waiting for perfect conditions should never cost a child their future.
As resources allow, Lakshya Foundation will continue to add facilities, enrich learning environments, and strengthen this school further.
Belpada is no longer just a stopover school.
It is becoming a destination of hope for tribal children across villages.
And for us, it is a reminder:
Transformation does not always begin with certainty.
Sometimes, it begins with responsibility—and the courage to act anyway.
