A Day of Courage: Bringing Dropouts Back to Education
For months, our Lakshya Foundation team had been walking dusty paths of tribal villages, sitting with children who had left school behind, and gently opening conversations about what it would mean to return. The very idea of “going back” after dropping out was unheard of in these parts. Once a child left school to work in the fields or herd cattle, their life path was assumed to be sealed forever.
But we saw something different. We saw possibility.
Our intention was simple, yet powerful: if these young boys and girls could prepare and appear for their 10th or 12th exams through Form No. 17 as external candidates, a world of opportunities would suddenly stand open before them. Clearing these milestones meant more than just certificates—it meant access to further studies, vocational training, and most importantly, dignity of choice in life.
To make this dream real, Lakshya Foundation committed to bearing every single expense. Whether it was travel, form-filling, tuition fees, books, or stationery—not a rupee was to come from their pockets. And to bridge the challenge of distance, we arranged for experienced teachers to come directly to them, offering coaching free of cost. We told them stories of great national role models who had risen through education, hoping to spark inspiration. Yet, deep inside, we knew: what this community truly needed was a hero of their own. Someone like them, from their soil, who had walked the road of education and reaped its rewards. Sadly, not a single such figure existed across the 27 tribal villages we had surveyed. The absence of a role model was a silence we couldn’t ignore.
So we decided—if a role model did not exist yet, we would create one by celebrating those who dared to return.
That day, we invited all the dropout students to gather at our informal centre. It didn’t matter whether they had made up their mind to come back to education or not; everyone was welcome. The hall slowly filled up—some students sat with folded arms, hesitant and skeptical, while others leaned forward, quietly hopeful.
Then came the moment that shifted everything.
One by one, those who had chosen to take the leap of faith were called onto the stage. Our trustees and special guests welcomed them, draping a shawl, handing them books, and most importantly, recognizing their decision in front of their peers. For each name announced, the room erupted with claps and cheers. Smiles broke across faces, shyness gave way to pride, and the students being felicitated glowed under the spotlight of encouragement.
We clicked photographs—not just for records, but to etch the moment in memory. The message was clear: the ones who take action are the real heroes.
Something extraordinary happened then. The students who had been reluctant, watching silently from their seats, began to shift. Their eyes softened, their posture straightened. By the end of the event, one by one, even the hesitant ones chose to return to education. The fear of being left behind was replaced by the joy of being part of something bigger.
By the time the sun set, every dropout in that room had made the decision to walk back into learning. What began as doubt ended in determination. It was a day that didn’t just change minds—it planted hope in an entire generation.
Truly, a day well spent.
