When a School Survives Because a Community Refuses to Let It Fall
On 21 January 2025, Lakshya Foundation returned to Z.P. School Shilandwadi.
The road felt familiar this time.
The silence too.
There was still no mobile network. Still no digital connectivity.
But there was something unmistakably present—continuity.
This was not a first visit driven by discovery.
It was a return driven by responsibility.
After documenting the school’s severe challenges on 26 December 2024, Lakshya Foundation felt the need to go back—not just to measure walls and cracks, but to understand the people who have kept this school alive despite everything.
A School That Refuses to Disappear
Z.P. School Shilandwadi stood exactly as we had left it—weathered, exposed, fragile.
And yet, standing.
The building bore visible signs of years of neglect:
- broken doors and windows,
- damaged toilets still without water,
- compromised boundaries,
- the looming presence of the massive tree that continues to threaten the structure during every storm.
But what struck us more deeply this time was not the condition of the building.
It was the quiet determination inside it.
Classes were ongoing.
Students were present.
Teachers were teaching.
Against logic, against comfort, against safety concerns—the school was functioning because giving up was never an option for the village.
Listening to the Village, One Conversation at a Time
Lakshya Foundation’s Secretary, Hitesh Thakare, along with volunteers Shubham and Nilesh, spent the day doing what has become central to our approach—listening.
Not in meetings.
Not through surveys.
But through conversations.
We sat with villagers outside their homes.
We spoke with parents who send their children to this school every day despite knowing its limitations.
We listened to elders who spoke of education as the only bridge they see between their children and a different future.
Their aspirations were clear:
- “Our children should not stop studying here.”
- “We don’t want to send them far away at this age.”
- “This school must survive.”
Their fears were just as honest:
- fear of safety during monsoons,
- fear of dignity for their daughters due to lack of toilets,
- fear that if conditions worsen, attendance will fall—and dropouts will return.
No one asked for luxury.
No one demanded perfection.
They asked only for basic dignity in education.
Teachers as the Pillars Holding the School Together
Time and again, villagers pointed toward the teachers.
“This school stands because of them.”
The teachers of Z.P. School Shilandwadi have done far more than their formal duties demand. They have adjusted schedules, managed resources that don’t exist, and carried emotional responsibility far beyond classrooms.
They are the reason the building has not turned into a locked structure.
They are the reason children still gather each morning.
They are the reason the word “school” still holds meaning here.
Lakshya Foundation witnessed once again a truth we have seen across tribal regions:
Infrastructure can be broken, but education survives as long as people refuse to abandon it.
Why This Second Visit Mattered
This visit was not about assessment alone.
It was about trust.
By returning within weeks, Lakshya Foundation sent a quiet but important message:
We did not forget. We did not move on. We are here to stay.
The community felt that.
The teachers acknowledged it.
The students sensed it—even if they couldn’t articulate it fully.
Looking Ahead With Clarity
Z.P. School Shilandwadi stands today not because systems have supported it, but because human commitment has held it together.
That commitment deserves reinforcement.
This second visit strengthened Lakshya Foundation’s resolve to intervene here—carefully, responsibly, and with the same seriousness that guided our work in Lavhali, Belpada, Nambarwadi, and Kuderan.
Transformation will take time.
Planning will take patience.
Resources will need to be mobilized.
But the direction is now clear.
A School Worth Standing With
As we left Shilandwadi that evening, the village slowly returned to its usual rhythm.
Children walked home.
Teachers locked classrooms.
Silence reclaimed the hills.
But this time, silence did not feel like neglect.
It felt like expectation.
Because when a community continues to believe despite desolation,
the least we can do is stand beside them and ensure that belief is rewarded.
