Transforming Z.P. School Lavhali: From a Broken Structure to a Beacon of Learning
From 26 March 2023, when the bhumi pujan marked a new beginning, to 08 July 2023, when the final layers of work neared completion, Z.P. School Lavhali underwent a transformation that went far beyond repair and renovation. What unfolded over these months was one of the most comprehensive school revitalisation efforts ever undertaken in a tribal region of Maharashtra—both in scale and intent.
This period represents nearly 100 days of continuous on-ground presence, planning, coordination, and execution by Lakshya Foundation, in close partnership with Synechron Technologies Pvt. Ltd., the school’s teaching staff, and the village community of Lavhali.
A Summer of Relentless Work and Shared Resolve
The transformation took place through the harsh summer months. Temperatures soared, conditions were demanding, and the work was complex. Yet, every single day, Lakshya Foundation’s team stood on-site, working hand-in-hand with engineers, labourers, teachers, and local residents.
What made this effort exceptional was the involvement of the school’s teaching staff, who stood shoulder to shoulder with the Foundation throughout the process. They monitored progress, shared insights about classroom needs, and remained present—not as observers, but as equal partners in the journey.
What once felt like an abandoned structure slowly began to feel like a school reclaiming its identity.
From Dilapidation to Dignity: What Changed
1. Structural & Infrastructure Revival
The first and most critical task was to make the school safe and stable. A building once defined by cracked walls, leaking roofs, and weakened pillars was structurally revived.
Classrooms, corridors, kitchen areas, and learning spaces were repaired thoroughly—addressing broken tiles, damaged plaster, unsafe doors and windows, and roof leakages. By the end of this phase, the campus met essential safety and usability standards, restoring confidence among teachers and parents alike.
2. Sanitation & Hygiene Upgrade
One of the most visible and impactful changes was sanitation.
An unusable two-block toilet was replaced with a four-block toilet complex, including:
- separate toilets for boys and girls,
- facilities for specially-abled students,
- and a dedicated urinal block.
With proper water supply, handwash basins, and improved drainage, hygiene returned to the school—not as a privilege, but as a basic right.
3. Electrification & Renewable Energy
Given the unreliable electricity supply in the region, the school was powered entirely through solar energy with inverter backup.
New electrical fittings ensured that classrooms and common areas remained functional and well-lit, enabling uninterrupted learning regardless of grid availability.
4. Learning Environment Enhancement
Dark, uninspiring rooms were transformed into engaging learning spaces.
Themed wall paintings, educational visuals, child-friendly interiors, new blackboards, furniture, and digital learning aids reshaped how children experienced school.
Digital education became a reality through the installation of Smart TV and Dish TV facilities, bridging long-standing gaps in exposure and learning methods.
5. Educational Resources & Enrichment
The establishment of Jyotiba Vachan Katta, a library accessible to both students and villagers, introduced a reading culture that extended beyond classrooms.
Play equipment was added to promote physical activity, teamwork, and holistic development—elements often missing in rural schools.
6. Water, Health & Sustainability Measures
Safe drinking water was ensured through the installation of a water purifier.
Water security was strengthened by repairing the borewell and implementing rainwater harvesting systems.
A green campus emerged as gardens were developed, and vegetable cultivation was initiated to support the mid-day meal program—linking nutrition, sustainability, and education.
7. Safety & Campus Security
A long-standing vulnerability was addressed through the construction of a UCR compound wall, chain-link fencing, a secure main gate, and a proper flagpost.
For the first time, the school had a defined, protected boundary—free from cattle intrusion and external hazards.
A Shift Beyond Bricks and Paint
Perhaps the most telling outcome of this transformation was behavioural.
- Parents who had earlier transferred their children to private English-medium schools began bringing them back to the revitalized Marathi Z.P. School.
- The school regained its position as a community hub, hosting national celebrations and educational events.
- Confidence in government schooling was restored—not through persuasion, but through visible change.
Lavhali’s Z.P. School became a point of pride, ownership, and aspiration for the entire village.
Leadership on the Ground: Commitment Beyond Roles
Throughout this entire period—from the first day after bhumi pujan to the final phase of completion—the transformation of Z.P. School Lavhali was driven not just by plans and resources, but by personal accountability and constant presence.
Trustee Mr. Shirish Patil, Secretary Mr. Hitesh Thakare, School Principal Mr. Pandurang Shirke, and Teacher Mrs. Charushila Mahajan took the project upon themselves with exceptional seriousness and ownership. This was not oversight from a distance.
They stood on-site through the harsh summer heat and the onset of monsoon rains, monitoring work, resolving issues in real time, coordinating with contractors, and ensuring that every decision aligned with the needs of children and teachers.
- In peak summer, when temperatures were unforgiving, the team remained present to ensure progress never slowed.
- During the rainy phase, when conditions became uncertain and difficult, the same commitment continued—protecting ongoing work and adapting execution without compromise.
For the school staff, this was not “extra responsibility.”
It was an extension of their belief that children deserve better conditions, no matter the hardship involved in creating them.
For Lakshya Foundation, this presence reflected a core principle the organisation has followed since its inception:
Transformation cannot be delegated. It must be lived on the ground.
This shared resolve—across trusteeship, administration, and teaching staff—became the backbone of the project’s success and ensured that Z.P. School Lavhali’s transformation was not just thorough, but deeply rooted in care, vigilance, and integrity.
A Model Ready to Travel
By early July 2023, the transformation was complete in spirit and structure. The Lavhali model began attracting attention from neighboring villages and schools, generating requests for similar interventions. What was once an isolated effort became a benchmark for rural school transformation.
The outcomes, processes, and learnings from this project have been formally documented in the Project Completion Report, jointly showing the scale, depth, and replicability of this initiative .
What This Period Represents
Between 26 March and 08 July 2023, Z.P. School Lavhali did not merely undergo renovation.
It underwent restoration—of safety, dignity, learning, and belief.
For Lakshya Foundation, this period stands as proof that:
When commitment is sustained and partnerships are sincere, even the most neglected spaces can become centres of possibility.
This was not just a project completed.
It was a promise honoured—and a path laid forward for many more schools to follow.
